This goal also aligns with the Greenest City and Healthy City goals of getting people to be using active forms of transportation both for sustainability and for personal health In order to continue fostering this positive growth, and encouraging use of the infrastructure investment that the City has made. Increasingly, it's normal to travel the Vancouver Way: on foot, by bike, or by self-powered rolling. ---- Read the 2...

Josh Sigurdson talks with author and economic analyst John Sneisen about the soaring bankruptcies in Vancouver which are up 17.94% since last year. According to Business Insider, "The OSB received 184 bankruptcy filings in June 2017, a 17.94% increase from the same month last last year. Total assets in these filings add up to $5.09 million, vs $17.32 million in outstanding liabilities." Total insolvencies are up 2.43% as well. As John notes, "People are indebted. People went on a debt binge when the Bank of Canada was lowering interest rates. When everyone's borrowing money in different businesses, what happens is over time when you over extend and there are several competitors in one business and everyone is borrowing, there will be a problem where some of them will go bankrupt because they're all fighting over the same dollars, the same principle to pay off the interest that doesn't actually exist in the first place. So they have to go out and try to find venues to find this new currency but the problem is they are all fighting in the same circle, and then suddenly there's not enough of that money anymore to feed one or two of the competitors in that market and then of course they lose." We will see more and more of this popping up where people are scrambling to pay off their massive amounts of debt that they've accumulated because of the cheap currency created at the Bank of Canada. Then there's also policies in place that push businesses to start something they probably shouldn't have started because they got government grants. It's normal to see bankruptcies in Canada because most businesses don't make it through their first couple years. The regulatory and tax burden is alarmingly extensive, and it constantly grows. This debt will continue to increase as interest rates go up and currency is created out of thin air. People with variable mortgages or loans, their debt is going to become more and more costly to service. This will build up slowly and then eventually we will see a massive crash. As the debt collapses within real estate and other markets, it trickles everywhere into the economy and people had value that they don't have anymore that they used for collateral on certain things. "People go to declare bankruptcy and they have collateral and their house is suddenly worth about 50% of what it used to be. This is a deflationary pressure on the economy. The Canadian government desperately needs inflation to pay off its debt so this may be a pressure that will lead into much more currency printing and quantitative easing in the future. " This is all the more reason to be financially responsible and self sufficient! Stay tuned for more from WAM! It's just arrived in a number of Canadian cities, including Vancouver and the Victoriaarea. Dog owners can choose from scores of boarding options, including 24/7 supervision, staying with other dogs at someone's home or a one-bedroom apartment in a downtown setting. Husband-and-wife team Aaron and Karine Hirschhorns started the company after finding themselves "guilt-ridden" relying on friends to dog-sit their two puppies. "I liken it to a dating site, because basically the dog owner can assess the dog's needs, what their needs are -- and search through hundreds of people in their area to find the perfect fit," Karine Hirschorns said. The Hirschhorns believe their business is better than a kennel, where "Spot will be stuck in a cage all day." Home boarding gives your dog individual attention, fun with a small number of well-socialized dogs, and supervision from a responsible pet owner -- at a price that doesn't add up to more than your vacation, Karine Hirschhorns says. Prices range anywhere from $20 to $55 a night, depending on accommodation. The Dog Vacay website allows pet owners to search their city and scroll through the dog owners in your area to see who might be a good match for your dog. There are currently 15 B.C. doggy homestays on offer. Bubba and owner Sarah Enright are offering to share their Mount Pleasant condo with another pooch for $42 a day -- or$37 a day for an extended stay. "Once you're taking care of one dog, taking care of two of them is actually a little bit easier because they keep each other occupied," Enright said. Pet owners can schedule a meet and greet to make sure they're comfortable with the surroundings. Dog Vacay offers insurance for both sitters and owners, up to $25,000. The site also encourages hosts to publish photo and video updates of your pet while you're away. There's also a 100-per-cent money-back guarantee if you're not satisfied. The service also encourages people who don't have time to care for a pet on a regular basis to become a part-time pet-sitter, setting their own hours and schedule. Vancouver is one of the best cities in the world to get around by bike, on foot, or even by skateboard. We prioritize transportation safety with a model that puts people walking first, and we build amenities that make it a fun, adventurous and safe experience. The City of Vancouver has a goal that by 2040, at least 2/3 of all trips will be made by foot, bike, and transit. ---- Read the 2016 Walking and Cycling Report Card: http://vancouver.ca/files/cov/walking-cycling-in-vancouver-2016-report-card.pdf Download cycling routes and maps: http://vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/cycling-routes-maps-and-trip-planner.aspx From July 5, 2017 News Release: Vancouver residents continue to make 50% of their trips by walking, cycling, and transit. Despite a rainy summer and snowy start to the winter in 2016, Vancouver saw a slight increase in walking and transit over last year, with cycling holding steady at 6.7% of all trips. In the annual Transportation Panel Survey conducted by the City each fall, it was found that among trips made as part of a commute in 2016, 10% of people travelled to work on bicycle, and 23% of people walked to work. Additionally, the average distance driven per person continues to decrease, down from 4,319 km per person in 2015, to 4,060 km in 2016. Meanwhile, transit ridership has increased to 16.5%, compared to 15.9% in 2015. There are clear geographical differences in the ways Vancouverites get around. Walking is most common in the West End and downtown, while cycling is more common in Kitsilano and the Vancouver Port area – made up of the Downtown Eastside, Strathcona, and the Grandview-Woodlands neighbourhoods. http://vancouver.ca/news-calendar/walk-bike-and-roll-to-community-events-this-summer.aspx
